Festival Corti a Ponte 2021 – Winners

WINNERS OF THE OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2021

OFFICIAL JURY

BEST FILM

THE SHOES OF A LITTLE GIRL

di Kedar Shrestha
2019 – Nepal – 13:01 min.

Jury comments:
The film assigns the rigorous and ambitious score of its leitmotif to the light movements of the young protagonist. Next to her, everyday life shines again and the world opens up the horizon of its possibilities. The outcome is an ode to intelligence free from conventions and constraints, which gives us the wonder of creativity.

BEST “BRIDGE” THEMED FILM

WINTRY SPRING

di Mohamed Kamel
2015 – Egitto – 15:00 min.

Jury comments:
The film follows a gesture capable of illuminating, even for a moment, a fabric of affections concealed in restless and suffering lives. In pursuing its slow emergence, the film traces with clear lines the fragility of the two characters, lost in different seasons of life.

BEST “TECHNOLOGY” THEMED FILM

A TINY TALE

di Sylvain Cuvillier, Chloé Bourdic, Théophile Coursimault, Noémie Halberstam, Maÿlis Mosny, Zijing Ye
2020 – Francia – 7:33 min.

Jury comments:
A Tiny Tale gives back to technology the surprising playfulness of an action capable of giving shape and reassembling worlds that correspond to our desires. The story is complex but well managed: the screen becomes a palette on which to create synchronicity or temporal holes, actions that are immediately linked together or large ellipses.

BEST FILM FOR CHILDREN

THE BOY AND THE EGG

di Juliana Capilé
2020 – Brasile – 11:59 min.

Jury comments:
Lightness, irony and estrangement for a non-rhetorical hymn to the discovery of the world and solidarity. In an orchestration that holds together with a sure hand the variety of audiovisual registers, sometimes slow and other times exuberant, The boy and the egg gives a joyful and serious polyphony at the same time, welding it in the hope of a reunification.

BEST FILM FOR TEENS

THE GIRLS ARE ALRIGHT

di Gwai Lou
2019 – Malesia – 14:30 min.

Jury comments:
In the walk of the two protagonists, “The girls are always right” creates a crystal suspended between the harshness of contexts and experiences, portrayed without discounts or compliments, and the beauty of youth that faces it, without however being corrupted by it yet. Amidst the turmoil and intimacy of friendship, spurred on by the aggression of an imminent future, the film pays homage to a difficult phase of life that the interpretation of the two young women forcefully returns.

BEST ANIMATION AWARD ex-aequo

JEAN

di Marion Auvin
2020 – Francia – 13:00 min.

Jury comments:
In the fluidity of the stroke that pours into the fullness of the form, Jean gives body to a passionate character in the pacified sweetness with which he relates to the world. In pursuing the protagonist’s momentary disorientation, which comes to life in a landscape of supporting actors drawn with precise lines, the film leads to an ending that pays homage to the surprising strength of the narrative, capable of freeing reality from its cages.

BEST ANIMATION AWARD ex-aequo

INANIMATE

di Lucia Bulgheroni
2018 – Regno Unito – 8:40 min.

Jury comments:
In a game of mirrors, through the intensity of its mechanical characters, Inanimate invites us to reflect on the very essence of humanity increasingly exposed to the drifts of inertial mechanism, convulsion, manipulation. As in a training journey, after having faced the ghosts of the present, we can look with confidence at the flight of paper wings

PREMIO MIGLIOR INTERPRETAZIONE

BRIXHILDA SHQALSI in Oltre il fiume

di Luca Zambolin
2020 – Italia – 15:00 min.

PREMIO MIGLIOR SCENEGGIATURA

di Christophe M. Saber
2014 – Svizzzera – 11:00 min.

PREMIO MIGLIOR FOTOGRAFIA

THE SWINGS

di Anastasiia Ostapenko
2020 – Russia – 13:35 min.

GIURIA LENTEZZA

PREMIO LENTEZZA

THE SHOES OF A LITTLE GIRL

di Kedar Shrestha
2019 – Nepal – 13:01 min.

Jury comments:

There is no right way to learn things, everyone learns at their own pace and follows their own paths, getting past judgments and conventions.
Observing the small details helps us to see the whole picture.
The times of education, together with the peaceful atmosphere of a Nepalese landscape, are the elements that led us to award the 2021 Lentezza prize to The shoes of a little girl.

GIURIA CLUB PER L’UNESCO DI PADOVA

PREMIO CLUB PER L’UNESCO DI PADOVA

THE SHOES OF A LITTLE GIRL

di Kedar Shrestha
2019 – Nepal – 13:01 min.

Jury comments:
The short film represents Nepalese culture simply and poetically. This modern fairy tale is a delicate representation of the never-ending learning process of the human being and it can be interpreted as a metaphor for respecting cultural diversity, as it suggests that we need to learn from differences rather than a passive acceptance that diversity simply exists.

THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE

di Camera-etc
2020 – Belgio – 4:55 min.

Jury comments:
For the spontaneous truth of the little ones, recognized and valued by the adults who led the project. The result is a simple, effective and congruent animation with the age and experiences of early childhood. Excellent sound and editing work.

PREMIO CIAS – CONCORSO BY 8.10

VIOLENCE NO MORE

di Anilupa
2020 – Portogallo – 3:47 min.

Jury comments:
For having dealt with a complex issue with originality, at the risk of stereotypes and clichés. We appreciated the care in the expressive research, in the backgrounds and in the animations that know how to combine different techniques, giving life to a simple and functional message. The work on the soundtrack is interesting. Professional post-production.

PREMIO CIAS – CONCORSO BY 11.13

LOST CHILDHOOD

di Ömer Güzel
2020 – Turchia – 5:44 min.

Jury comments:
For the touching way in which the destruction of the Kurdish city of Nusaybin is told, seen through the eyes of the boys, who have been protagonists from the very beginning. The terrible experience of the war is rendered very effectively with the metaphor of the game of ‘hide and seek’, which allows us to follow the protagonist in the anguished search for his companions. The filmic language is used in an expressive way as well as the choice of sound, which takes strength from the desperate voice, which calls and doesn’t find.

Menzione speciale CIAS

VIBRANT

di Toon Club
2020 – India – 0:39 min.

Jury comments:
For the freshness of the animation and the expressive choice, which finds its poetic signature in simplicity. The sound choice is fun.

GOOD FRIENDS

di Karine Miralles
2020 – Francia – 1:40 min.

Jury comments:
Idea and characters united in their coherence of the theme, creativity and animatorship, (Art.12-Charter of Rights: children are entitled […] to live artistic and cultural experiences accompanied by their teachers) ,together with small directors, they managed to combine art-culture-rights.
The short Good friends : 5 friends, different in their membership, from different countries, “together” share the only source of fundamental water of life (CRC Convention on the Rights of the Child: art.6 the right to life, survival and proper development) without any prevarication (CRC art.15 right to reunite with your Friends… always respecting the rights of others).

INTERLACED STORIES

di Anilupa
2019 – Portogallo – 7:07 min.

Jury comments:
A dream among the pages of a book memorized and developed with joyful and colorful images in a garden on the seabed as spatial…. An excellent work of animation, creative and original, where imaginative and heterogeneous characters live together in harmony. In this Short the following CRC rights are won: art.13… the child has the right to freedom of expression… Art.28… right to education… Art.31 … right to play and creative activities.

LOST CHILDHOOD

di Ömer Güzel
2020 – Turchia – 5:44 min.

Jury comments:
The incipit of the video frames a round circle of five boys. In the background condominiums under construction. Near a cemetery begins the game of “hide and seek”. During the count, in retrospect, a ghostly landscape appears with only one tree in the center surrounded by rubble.
The close-up of a boy’s eyes brings back to reality, words are no use. That questioning look seems to mean: -And which side are you on? A non-didascalic short film that goes straight to the theme of war and its harmful consequences on future generations. Clear reference to the following CRC articles: -art.31 right to play -art.38 protection from war -art.39 support from trauma due to war.

ATTESTATO DI MERITO PER L’EDUCAZIONE AI DIRITTI BY 14-18
ASSEGNATO DALLA GIURIA UNICEF

KĀHULI

di Phoenix Maimiti Valentine
2020 – Hawaii – 3:02 min.

This short film, with original language, simple images and drawings, with the use of particular colors, presents children with the importance of defending the environment for the survival of all living things. The right to live in a world that is respectful of health and the environment (Article 24 of the CRC), as well as the objective of protecting the seas and oceans, recalls the need for sustainable development, as indicated by United Nations Agenda 20/30.

Originality and creativity in animation, have been able to transmit and share moods and BI-DREAMS that ALL OF US, have experienced and /or are still experiencing due to this pandemic. This short film has been able to express the NEED which the CRC identifies as one of the four main rights of the Convention: in Art. 12 the right to listen, which is even more important when the right to listen involves family and social relationships ‘the right of children and adolescents to their emotions’, or the right to hear what they feel (fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, and loneliness).

SPIRAL BOUND

di Jones Nasilele

Jury comments:
For its near-acrobatic use of the iPhone to create a sequence that gives a powerful and thought-provoking rendition of our repetitive daily life, a life where a primal fight for survival is the constant in our fundamental equation. As a side note, we found it quite fitting, since we are dealing with a long sequence, to comment it with one lengthy period. We do hope our translator is up to the challenge.

For the ability of the very young author to wisely use the ingredients of the horror genre and to create, only with lights and sounds and without the use of special effects, an atmosphere of suspense, anxiety and fear that made us shiver.
